On August 17, 2024, Quanzhou Medical College hosted a grand event titled “Renowned Calligraphers on Campus: Crafting Admission Letters for the Class of 2024 with the Fragrance of Ink” in the multifunctional hall on the 12th floor of the Library and Information Center. The college specially invited 24 esteemed calligraphers from the Quanzhou Calligraphy Association to the campus, where they showcased their mastery of brush calligraphy, creating bespoke admission letters for the new students with great artistry.
The event commenced with a heartfelt speech by Li Boqun, the Party Secretary of the college. In his remarks, he underscored that Chinese brush calligraphy, as a treasured gem of Chinese culture, is far more than a tool for writing or an artistic expression; it serves as a vessel for the nation's history, culture, and spirit. Every stroke and flourish carries a profound cultural heritage and embodies a unique spiritual essence. By choosing to handwrite admission letters with brush calligraphy, the college seeks to instill in new students a deep sense of history and purpose, allowing them to feel, from the very first step into medical college, the intrinsic connection between the practice of medicine and traditional culture. Secretary Li expressed his hope that this initiative would inspire every medical student to incorporate the concentration and perseverance found in calligraphy into their medical endeavors, safeguarding lives and upholding the legacy of medicine with exceptional skills and noble ethics, while contributing to the health and well-being of humanity.
Last year, our college introduced the innovative practice of handwriting admission letters with brush calligraphy for the first time, a move that received widespread praise from society. This year, we have continued this tradition, aiming to make each admission letter a memorable keepsake, marking the new beginning of the new students’ journey in life.
Following the event, the handwritten admission letters — imbued with the meaning of the “first lesson” for the incoming students — will be mailed to recipients across the country. These unique letters not only serve as a warm welcome to the new students but also convey the college’s heartfelt wishes and high hopes for their future paths in the field of medicine.
