To strengthen the professional ethics education of medical students and reinforce the ideological foundation of integrity in medical practice, Yang Xiumin, Member of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of Quanzhou Medical College, delivered an insightful and vivid ideological and political education class to the Class of 2024 students from the School of Stomatology on May 21. The class was titled “Promoting Integrity and Practicing the Benevolence of Healers”, and was chaired by Qiu Donghai, Dean of the School of Stomatology.
During the lecture, Secretary Yang began by introducing the concept of medical ethics, systematically explaining the interrelations among professional ethics, medical morality, and the ethical standards specific to medical students. She elaborated on classical perspectives on medical ethics across ancient and modern times, both in China and abroad, and clarified the values and codes underpinning socialist medical ethics.
She then drew upon a series of typical cases from recent years in the healthcare sector to analyze the grave challenges facing medical ethics and professional conduct today. Secretary Yang stressed the critical importance of upholding professional morality in the new era. She urged students to remain committed to their original aspiration of integrity in medicine, and to embody not only clinical excellence but also noble ethical standards. She reminded them to keep the core value of "benevolence of the healer" at heart, to actively practice the core socialist values, and to contribute to building harmonious doctor-patient relationships and advancing the vision of Healthy China.
Through this ideological and political education session, students came to a deeper understanding that becoming a good doctor requires not only solid academic knowledge but also a firm grounding in ethical conduct—a compulsory course in itself. They were reminded to uphold the principles of “practicing medicine with integrity and healing with compassion,” to follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, to align closely with the people-centered development philosophy, and to stay true to their original mission and ideals. In doing so, they are expected to lay a strong health foundation for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
